LAWRENCEVILLE--The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Iona Sunday afternoon. "Today was more about what we did not do rather than what Iona did," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "The game is 90 minutes long and we didn't play 90 minutes."
The Gaels (3-6-2, 1-1 MAAC) scored in the 25th minute of play on a goal scored at point blank range off a crossing pass. "We gave up a soft goal and we just didn't play well enough in the first half," Hounsome said. "We put ourselves in a hole."
Rider (5-3-2, 0-2 MAAC) out-shot Iona 11-8 but could not find the back of the net for the second game in a row. "We played better in the second half," Hounsome said.
Rider senior goalkeeper Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) made one save. "When your keeper only has one save and that came in the last minute, (and you lose the game) then you haven't put your best foot forward," Hounsome said.
Rider and Iona tied 1-1 last season in New Rochelle. The Broncs defeated Iona 2-0 in 2010, the last time the Gaels visited Lawrenceville. That broke a streak of three straight losses to the Gaels.
The two teams have now met 16 times, with Rider holding an 8-6-2 advantage in the series that began in 1997.
Rider travels to Manhattan Friday evening and to Saint Peter's next Sunday for a pair of MAAC games. "We put ourselves in the hole today and conference-wise as well," Hounsome said. "It is the biggest week coming up in the career of our seniors. We need two (positive) results or the season is over."
