Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y.--Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Niagara University on Saturday afternoon.
For the Rider men, senior Mike Gershon (East Brunswick) won a three-set marathon at sixth singles, 6-1, 1-6 and 12-10 in the tie-breaker.
"Niagara was steadier and more experienced," said head coach Ed Torres about the men's match. "Really, the highlight of the day was the play of Gershon. He is one of the fastest players on the team and made an amazing comeback. He went after a point late in the tiebreaker and smashed into the wall, doubled faulted twice to setup match point for Niagara and then came back and won the set. It was just a gutsy performance. It was quite a win for him."
"I just kept fighting and took one point at a time," Gershon remembered. "In the tiebreaker, I was a little shaken up when I hit my head against the wall but I knew I only had a few more points to win. I just battled through and ended up with the victory."
For the Bronc women, sophomore Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won four games at second singles before losing 6-0, 6-4 with freshman Cynthia Vlad (North Hunterdon) winning four games at fourth singles before falling 6-2, 6-2.
"The Niagara women, they were just a superior team," Torres said. "They made fewer errors and hit the ball with authority which on a fast, indoor court, is a very tough combination."
Vlad and senior Alexa Manforti (Toms River/Toms River HS South) won five games at second doubles before losing 8-5.
The Rider men host Philadelphia University on October 9 with the Bronc women hosting Philadelphia University on October 11.
