JERSEY CITY, NJ- Saint Peter is often depicted as seated at the pearly gates, deciding who shall enter the gateway to Heaven.
The Rider women's soccer team needed to go through Saint Peter's in order to stay on path toward a rewarding after-life, the MAAC playoffs.
"We're back," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "We needed two wins after last weekend and we got them. We're back in a better position (for the playoffs)."
Junior Jennifer Meier (Sayville, NY/St. Anthony's) scored two goals and senior Abi Cottam (Leominster, England/Ludlow) added a goal and an assist to lead Rider to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win at Saint Peter's Sunday afternoon.
"Jenn got two, so that was good," Hounsome said. "Hopefully that kick-starts her offense."
Cottam scored in the 60th minute for a 5-0 lead and assisted on a goal by senior Alexis Coughlin (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) to give Rider a 6-0 lead. "It was good to see all the front line players score today," Hounsome said. "It was good to see Alexis get her first goal of the season."
It is an annual event in Rider women's soccer, when the temperature drops, Cottam's play heats up. The Brit obviously prefers the cooler temperatures and it showed again Sunday.
"Abi played well," Hounsome said. "It is definitely a coincidence between the cooler weather today and Abi getting a goal and an assist."
Cottam now has 72 career points and 24 career goals, both third most ever at Rider. Cottam is the Rider career leader in assists with 24.
Meier scored her first goal of the season to give Rider a 3-0 lead in the 25th minute of play, and came back and scored again five minutes later for a 4-0 lead.
Meier now has 16 career goals, fifth most ever at Rider.
The Broncs took a 1-0 lead just 2:48 into the game on a header by junior Bridgette Bartkowski (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) on an assist by senior Angela Monaco (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem). Bartkowski now has 22 career points, 16th most ever at Rider.
The Peacocks avoided the shutout with a goal with 12 minutes left to play and scored again in the 89th minute for the final score. "I guess it is human nature to take your foot of the gas a little bit up 6-0," Hounsome said.
Rider (7-3-2, 2-2 MAAC) out-shot Saint Peter's (1-12, 0-3 MAAC) 17-6, including 12-4 in shots on goal. "It was dominating, going up 4-0 at half time," Hounsome said.
Rider senior goalkeeper Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) made two saves.
Rider lost 2-1 to Saint Peter's last season despite out-shooting the Peacocks 35-7.
Rider and Saint Peter's have met 16 times since the series began in 1997 with Rider winning 13. Before last year the last time Saint Peter's defeated Rider was 2005.
The Broncs host Loyola October 13.
