Rider's Perrella Earns MAAC Honors
LAWRENCEVILLE-Rider University senior goalkeeper Matt Perrella was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for all games played the first week of October.
Last week Perrella (North Brunswick, N.J./N. Brunswick) played in two games and compiled a win, a tie and a shutout. He compiled 11 saves without allowing a goal in 166 minutes of action.
"Matt has always had the ability but it was a matter of him setting his mind to what he was doing," said Rider head coach Charlie Inverso. "I think he is going to finish out his senior year in a very good way."
Perrella missed six games with an ankle injury but came back to play the second half and the overtime in Rider's 2-1 overtime win at Canisius Friday night.
"Matt came back from the ankle sprain and is 100 percent now and it has made a difference," Inverso said.
Perrella made his first start in a month on Sunday against undefeated Niagara and collected his sixth career shutout.
Canisius and Niagara owned a combined record of 14-1-5 before Rider came to town.
The Broncs are 2-0-1 in their last three games and host Siena Friday night at 7pm on the Ben Cohen Field.
