Rider 14th of 16 teams
at Binghamton Fall Invitational
Hiawatha, N.Y.--The Rider University men's golf team wrapped up its fall schedule finishing 14th out of 16 teams at the Binghamton Fall Invitational.
The 36-hole competition took place October 7-8 at The Hills at Hiawatha Landing par-72, 7,104 yard Golf Course in Hiawatha, N.Y.
Rider shot a 316 on the final 18-holes for a tournament total of 631. The Broncs shot 315 on the first 18-holes Sunday.
The Broncs topped 15th place Wagner (656) and finished two shots behind Colgate who came in 13th with a two day total of 629 (317-312).
"We shot a 316 today in freezing conditions," said head coach Bob Whartenby. "Not a horrible way to end the season but we still need to find a way to post a fourth score instead of only three. It seems like we are just missing one solid round by one of our guys."
For the Broncs, junior James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y/Monsignor Farrell) finished the tournament tied for 24th place out of 78 golfers after a final round of 77. Buttermark shot a 74 on the first 18-holes for a two day total of 151, seven shots over par.
"James (Buttermark) played well this tournament," Whartenby said. "His ball striking was much improved and he made some putts."
Also for Rider, senior Beau Guarino (Burlington Township) ended day two shooting a 74 for a two-day total of 156. Guarino shot an 82 on Sunday, and finished in a tie for 39th place. Sophomore Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) finished the tournament in a tie for 67th with a total of 164 (79-85). Freshman Joe Hughes (Tabernacle/Seneca) finished in 71st place (87-80-167). Sophomore Cole Clark (Califon/Voorhees) finished in 73rd place after rounds of 80-90 for a total of 170.
Laval University won the tournament with a team total of 586 (291-295). Saint Peter's University and Hofstra tied for second place after shooting two identical rounds of 297 and 301 for team totals of 598.
"We just need to build and learn from this season," Whartenby added. "We showed signs of life but again just need to improve on our short games and get a final score posted."
Bucknell (600) came in fourth place finishing one shot ahead of the host Bearcats (601) and two shots ahead of Towson, who finished sixth (602).
St. Bonaventure (606) wrapped up day two coming in seventh. Cornell (607) came in one shot behind the Bonnies in eighth and two stokes behind Seton Hall (609), who placed ninth. Mount St. Mary's (613) finished in 10th place, with Fordham University (621) coming in 11th.
The University of Ottawa (627) finished in 12th place and the Bearcat's "B" squad finished in 16th with a 657.
Rider's season resumes in March with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships taking place April 26-28, 2013 at Disney's Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
