Rider University 5 Wagner College 2
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.--Led by the play of senior Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway Regional), the Rider University men's tennis team posted a 5-2 non-conference win at Wagner College on Friday afternoon.
"We defeated Wagner at the bottom of the lineup," said head coach Ed Torres. "We won the doubles point and at third through fifth singles with Wagner having no available player at sixth singles. We just had more depth."
"The match went well," Laverty said. "Playing Wagner, it is always a close battle. We got some key points in important situations and came home with the victory."
Laverty won 6-0, 6-2 at third singles and teamed up with senior Matt DiMartino (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) for an 8-6 win at second doubles.
"Matt and I have been playing well together in doubles," Laverty added. "The more we play, the better our game is getting and we are playing at a higher level."
"Drew played his usual, steady game," Torres said. "He is very quick and keeps the ball alive. He is not a power hitter. He is volley player at the net."
The Rider women travel to Wagner on Saturday.
Both the Bronc men and women travel to Drexel Monday.
