Rider University 2, Siena College 1 (2ot)
LOUDONVILLE, NY- Stayin' Alive.
Fortunately for the 2012 Broncs, they are too young to have known the dance/music genre known as 'disco'.
The Rider women's soccer team is also fortunate to be Stayin' Alive in the playoff hunt.
"The last 50 seconds of the game was unbelievable," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.
Senior Abi Cottam (Leominster, England/Ludlow) scored with six seconds left in the second and final overtime to lead Rider to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory at Siena Friday afternoon.
"Abi shot wide with 30 second left and was so upset," Hounsome said. Siena had a goal kick but Rider won the header. Cottam then took a pass from freshman Tara Ballay (Delran, NJ/Delran) and scored her fourth goal of the season to win it. "Abi could barely see, she was crying after the missed opportunity," Hounsome said. "She took the pass from Tara and scored. To be able to bounce back so quickly after the disappointment and score such an emotional goal was brilliant."
With the win the Broncs (10-3-3, 5-2-1 MAAC) remain in fourth place in the MAAC, the final playoff spot, heading into the regular season finale Sunday at first-place Marist.
Rider took a 1-0 lead 1:18 into the second half when junior Jennifer Meier (Sayville, NY/St. Anthony's) took a long pass from junior Jody Sokol (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) and scored her fourth goal of the season.
"Jen scored a great goal," Hounsome said. "She caused a lot of problems for their defense today."
Siena (6-10-1, 2-5-1 MAAC) tied the score with 39 minutes left to play in regulation.
Rider senior goalkeeper Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) made five saves.
Rider out-shot the Saints 30-12, including 6-3 in overtime. "We controlled the tempo," Hounsome said. "Overall I think we deserved to win."
Rider is now 2-0-2 in overtime games this year.
The 10 wins is the most for Rider since 2004 when the Broncs finished 12-7-2 and reached the MAAC Title Game.
Rider and Siena tied 0-0 last season in Lawrenceville. The last time Rider beat Siena was 2006.
Rider lost 4-1 to Siena the last time Rider traveled to Loudonville.
With the win the Broncs are 5-0-1 in their last six games.
Rider plays the regular season finale Sunday at first-place Marist. A tie or win Sunday and Rider will be in the playoffs. "We just need to make sure we don't lose," Hounsome said. "We've only lost three times all year, so we're a tough team to beat. We just have to do that one more game."
A loss Sunday and Rider's playoff hopes will rest on Iona tying or losing to Saint Peter's.
