LAWRENCEVILLE-The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Saint Peter's Sunday afternoon.
"A story that has repeated itself this year," said Rider head coach Charlie Inverso. "We came out dominated the first 20 minutes and probably could have had three goals but we don't put away our chances."
Saint Peter's (3-12-1, 2-5 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute of play on an 'own goal' when a Peacock direct kick was accidently headed into the Rider goal by a Rider defender.
"Sometimes it's like we're a little cursed," Inverso said about the 'own goal'.
The Peacocks scored the insurance goal with 15 minutes left in the second half. "When you are constantly chasing the game, you push forward and that allows them the opportunity to score again." Inverso said.
Saint Peter's out-shot Rider (3-13-1, 2-5-1 MAAC) 16-14, including 8-7 in shots on goal.
Rider senior goalkeeper Matt Perrella (North Brunswick, N.J./N. Brunswick) made six saves.
The Broncs beat Saint Peter's 2-0 in Jersey City last year and 1-0 at Saint Peter's in 2009. The last time Saint Peter's came to Lawrenceville the Peacocks won 5-1 in 2010.
Rider holds a 21-11 advantage in the series with SPU that began in 1960.
The Broncs play the final game of the season Friday, hosting Loyola at 7pm. Rider's graduating seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. "These seniors have put in four years of hard work," Inverso said, "so we really want to do something special for them. We need to make sure they go out on a good night."
