Marist College 1, Rider University 0
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY-The Rider women's soccer season came to an end Sunday with a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss to Marist. "This is very disappointing," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.
With Rider's loss and Iona's 2-0 victory over Saint Peter's on Sunday, the Broncs and Iona tied for fourth place. Iona defeated Rider 1-0 this season, giving the tie-breaker and the final playoff spot to the Gaels.
Regular season champion Marist (14-6, 8-1 MAAC) scored 1:26 into the second half.
Marist out-shot Rider (10-4-3, 5-3-1 MAAC) 11-7. "It is kind of a shame that you can be 10-4-3 and not be in the conference tournament," Hounsome said. "It is upsetting, really."
The 10 wins is the most since 2004 and the .676 winning percentage is the highest in program history.
Both teams had 4 shots on goal and two corner kicks.
Marist had 18 fouls to Rider's 10. "When there are 28 fouls and 18 of them are theirs, there were almost twice as many fouls as shots," Hounsome said. "It wasn't a soccer game today. We weren't able to play our game today."
Rider senior goalkeeper Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) made three saves.
Rider senior Abi Cottam (Leominster, England/Ludlow) graduates with 78 career points in just 61 games. The Rider career record-setter with 26 assists, Cottam graduates third in career goals (26) and career points.
