Ballay Rookie of Year, Cottam & Meier First Team
14 Broncs on All-Academic Team
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY-Three members of the Rider University women's soccer team were honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at the MAAC Championship Tournament today. Rider also had a conference-high 14 players named to the MAAC All-Academic team.
Freshman Tara Ballay (Delran, NJ/Delran) was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year, while senior Abi Cottam (Leominster, England/Ludlow) and junior Jennifer Meier (Sayville, NY/St. Anthony's) were both named to the First Team All-MAAC.
"It is great for Tara and our program to have a MAAC Rookie of the Year and she thoroughly deserves this recognition," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome said. "She is going to develop into an outstanding student-athlete for our program and the Rider athletic department. She is following in the footsteps of both Abi and Jenn and it is fantastic to see both of them get recognized for a successful season after such a heart breaking end last Sunday."
Ballay, who shares the award with Niagara's Haille Price, finished eighth in the MAAC in points per game with four goals and three assists for 11 points in 16 games.
Cottam earns First Team honors for the second year in a row after earning Second Team honors as a sophomore. This year Cottam led the conference in assists with seven and was fifth in the MAAC in points per game (15 in 17 games) and 10th in goals (four).
Rider's career leader in assists with 26, Cottam's 26 career goals and her 78 career points are both third most ever at Rider.
Meier finished 10th in the MAAC in both points (11) and goals (four).
"The second consecutive first team nod for Abi and first time selection for Jenn are well deserved," Hounsome said.
The Broncs finished tied for fourth place in the MAAC at 5-3-1 and compiled an overall record of 10-4-3, Rider's most wins since the 2004 season and the highest winning percentage (.676) in program history.
Cottam and Meier were also named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Cottam owns a 3.99 grade point average as a Psychology major, while Meier has a 3.76 grade point average, majoring in Elementary Education/Mathematics.
Also named to the MAAC All-Academic team were senior Alexis Coughlin (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville), sophomore Becca Kape (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), senior Demi Mello (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck), senior Meghan Mohr (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem), senior Angela Monaco (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem), senior Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter), senior Kelly Sandefur (Melbourne, Australia/Carey Baptist Grammar), sophomore Katrina Seidenthal (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), junior Jody Sokol (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem), senior Kate Stevens (Deddington, England/Chenderit), senior Claire Thompson (East Greenwich, R.I./E. Greenwich) and junior Carolyn Wiley (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape).
Coughlin is a Biology major with a 3.34, Kape is an Elementary Education/Psychology major with a 3.49, Mello owns a 3.40 as an Accounting major, Mohr is an Elementary Education major with a 3.61, Monaco has a 3.37 majoring in Biology, Nichols is a Business major with a 3.34, Sandefur is a business major with a 3.97, Sokol owns a 3.23 majoring in Liberal Arts, Stevens is a Law Enforcement major with a 3.73, Thompson majors in Public Relations and has a 3.90 and Wiley owns a 3.62 as an Elementary Education/Psychology major.
