Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.--In a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match, originally postponed by Hurricane Sandy, the Rider University volleyball team was blown away by Iona on Monday evening.
"We didn't show up and play and Iona took advantage," said head coach Christopher Feliciano. "We have to stop playing like someone else will get that shot or make that play and go all out for every ball."
Iona won in straight sets 25-18, 25-9, 25-14.
For Rider (11-15, 4-12 MAAC), senior Brittany Gajewski (Whitehouse Station/Hunterdon Central) had 13 digs with sophomore Ashlee Amatulli (Menifee, Calif./Temecula Valley) adding 10 assists. Gajewski entered the match 18th nationally in digs per set with 5.53.
Iona out-hit Rider .347 to .133 and the Gaels had 13 service aces in the match which took one hour and nine minutes.
The Gaels avenged a 3-2 loss to Rider on September 30 in Lawrenceville.
"We've demonstrated that we are a much better team than we showed tonight," Feliciano said. "It is up to the players to work hard and understand that a performance like this is unacceptable."
The match was originally scheduled for last week but was postponed due to the severe weather and resulting damage in the New York/New Jersey area from Sandy.
The Broncs have lost four straight.
Rider returns home for the final three matches of the regular season, beginning with a non-conference match against Fordham in Alumni Gymnasium at 7pm Wednesday evening.
