Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region Honoree
LAWRENCEVILLE--Junior Sandra Penas of the Rider University field hockey team was named to the 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Region First Team it was announced Thursday,
"We are so proud that Sandra has been recognized for her outstanding play," said head coach Lori Hussong. "Her hard work, especially the last half of the season definitely paid off and was a key ingredient to our championship run."
One of 64 names on the first team nationally (16 in each region), Penas (Barcelona, Spain) will now appear on the Longstreth/NFHCA All-America ballot with the winners announced on November 20.
"It is an honor for her to be included among some of the best players, not only in the Mid-Atlantic Region but also in the country," Hussong added.
A 5-6 forward, Penas was named to the Northeast Conference First Team for the third season in a row as Rider advanced to the NCAA Play-In at UMass, with the Broncs losing 2-1 in overtime as Penas scored Rider's only goal.
Penas, the 2011 NEC Offensive Player of the Year and 2010 NEC Rookie of the Year, helped lead Rider to its fourth NEC regular season title in a row and was the tournament MVP as the Broncs won their third straight NEC championship.
Penas led the NEC with 20 goals and 49 points.
Penas is currently seventh in the nation in goals and eighth in points per game.
This is the second season in a row that Penas has earned All-Region honors after earning Second Team All-Region recognition as a sophomore.
Penas will enter her senior season third on Rider's all-time scoring list (54g, 25a) with 133 points.
The Broncs return 19 letterwinners in 2013 for coach Hussong who has a 184-77 record in 13 seasons at Rider.
