Rider's Wagner on MAC All-Century Team
ANNVILLE, PA-Rider University's John Wagner '67 was named to the MAC All-Century Soccer Team, the Middle Atlantic Conference announced today.
The MAC is celebrating 100 years (1912-2012) by naming All-Century teams in three eras, 1912 to 1971, 1972-1992, and 1993-present. Wagner was named to the All-Century team for 1912-1971.
"This is a nice honor," said Wagner, a Rider Athletics Hall of Famer. Wagner was an All-American soccer player at Rider and was the MVP of the MAC Northern Division.
Wagner was a defender who led Rider to five shutout victories in 1966 and went on to play professionally.
Wagner was All-East as a junior and was one of 75 players invited to the Olympic Trials, advancing to the final 15 players.
The All-Century Team ballots were posted on line at the MAC and member institutions websites and the teams were selected by fan voting.
"I wanted to thank all of the members of the Rider Community who voted for me," Wagner said.
While at Rider Wagner also helped the 1967 baseball team reach the College World Series as the team captain and starting catcher. As a senior he received the ECAC Scholar-Athlete Award.
After Rider Wagner became a renowned coach, earning New Jersey Coach of the Year honors while winning several New Jersey High School soccer and baseball titles at Notre Dame High School and Hightstown High School.
