Dashana Ransome Rider 60m hurdles record
BETHLEHEM, Pa.--The Rider University men's and women's track and field team kicked off their winter season in the Fast Times at Lehigh meet Friday night.
The meet was held at the Mountain Hawk's Rauch Field House.
For the Rider men, junior Steven Brown (Penns Grove) won the long jump (7.25m) and the triple jump, (15.11m) in the field. Brown's triple jump set a new Rider record besting 15.01m by Mavis Polk in December, 2002 and Brown qualified for IC4As in both events. Senior David Hightower (Easton, Pa./Easton) finished first in the men's 60-meter hurdles, running an IC4A qualifying time of 8.18.
"Steve Brown competed exceptionally tonight," said head coach Bob Hamer. "Breaking the triple jump record is a great accomplishment. He's trained very hard this fall and the results only indicate that he is primed for a great year."
For the Rider women, freshman La'tazah Coleman (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) opened her collegiate career with first place finishes in both the 60-meter (7.76) and 200-meter dash (25.57) and freshman Dashana Ransome (Irvington) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles running a new Rider record time of 8.86, besting the 9.04 mark by Karlise Cureton at Delaware in February, 2008.
"(La'tazah) Coleman had an outstanding meet," said Hamer. "She's a special talent who can achieve great things if she continues to work hard and stays committed. Overall, the freshman had an outstanding meet tonight. They're obviously very talented and they competed well tonight. It's very exciting to have them contribute so much to this program in the first meet by winning events and breaking records."
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Daria Chadwick (Summit), sophomore Ashley Edwards (Westfield), freshman Madeline Hummel (Marlton/Holy Cross) and sophomore Ashley Hunter (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) ran for first place in 4:01.79. In the field, junior Rhea Phipps (Basking Ridge/Ridge) was weight throw winner, reaching an ECAC qualifying distance of 17.11m. Hummel also took second in the 500 meter (1:19.31) with Edwards finishing third in the 400 meter (1:00.32).
Also for the Rider men, sophomore Anthony DeFranco (Berkeley Heights, N.Y./Governor Livingston) recorded a second place finish in the pole vault (4.50m). DeFranco also placed fourth in the men's 60-meter dash.
Senior James Burroughs ran for third place in the men's 60-meter hurdles (8.37) and junior Wilvenson Baptiste (Irvington) finished third in the 400-meter dash (50.72). Junior Joseph Carlin (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Tech.) placed third in the 1000-meter run in 2:34.42.
For the Bronc women, sophomore Taylor Harmon (Robbinsville) and Coleman tied for third place in the women's high jump, both reaching 1.60m and junior Treasure Burke (Pennsauken/Camden Catholic) took third in the weight throw with an ECAC qualifying throw of 16.08m.
For the Bronc men, freshman Darnell Charles (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) earned a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.97).
Chadwick ran for fourth place in the women's 60-meter hurdles in 8.99, a time under Rider's old record, which now belongs to Ransome. Senior Mia Riley (West Caldwell/James Caldwell) ran for fifth place in the women's 60-meter dash, clocking a 7.86 and junior Gabrielle Randell (Warwick N.Y./Warwick Valley) finished fifth in the 1,000-meter run (3:07.87).
In the men's 60-dash, Charles placed fifth with a time of 7.15 and senior Perry Asare jumped for fifth in the triple jump (6.67m). In the field, sophomore Joe Vicini (Millstone/Notre Dame) place fifth in the weight throw, reaching 16.21m. Junior George Osti (Union) came in sixth in the weight throw behind Vicini throwing for 15.01m
Freshman Olivia Rosenberger (North Wales, Pa/Gwyned Mercy Academy) placed sixth in the women's triple jump (10.81m).
The Broncs will compete at the Monmouth Invite on January 5.
