Rider Hosts St. Francis Brooklyn Saturday
LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday at 2pm when the Broncs host St. Francis Brooklyn in Alumni Gymnasium.
Rider (5-5) is coming off a 62-61 overtime loss at Central Connecticut on December 21.
The Broncs are led by senior Sironda Chambers (Wilmington, Del.) who is averaging 15.5 points per game.
Chambers has scored at least 20 points in three of the last six games and was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week at the beginning of December after being named to the all-tournament team at the Brown Classic.
Rider is led in rebounding by junior MyNeshia McKenzie (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Delco)). McKenzie's 9.3 boards per contest are second in the MAAC and her 12.6 points per game is second on the Bronc squad, behind Chambers.
Senior Caitlin Bopp (Baltimore, Md./Inst. of Notre Dame) continues her strong play, averaging 9.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Bopp is 57th in the nation, averaging almost two blocks per game. As a team, Rider is 31st nationally, averaging 5.3 blocks per contest.
Bopp was named the MAAC Player of the Week in the second week of December after helping the Broncs defeat Army.
Formally known as St. Francis (NY), the Terriers opened the season with two straight wins before losing the last eight in a row. Including an overtime loss to Yale, St. Francis Brooklyn has suffered five of its losses by single digits.
Rider and St. Francis last met on November 30, 2011 when the Broncs won 68-48 in Brooklyn Heights, New York, behind 26 points from then senior Ali Heller and 14 points from Chambers.
Former Northeast Conference rivals, Saturday marks the 25th meeting in the all-time series with the Broncs winning 21 of the first 24, including the last three in a row, dating back to the 2003-04 season. The Terriers last defeated Rider during the 1996-97 season.
After the game against the Terriers, Rider returns to action on Friday, January 4, 2013 when the Broncs host defending conference champion Marist College in the MAAC opener at 7pm.
