Santiago Battles for 7th Place Tonight

EVANSTON, IL-The Rider wrestling team is competing in the 50th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern University.  The Broncs are currently in 20th place in the 48-team field in the most prestigious amateur wrestling event in the nation, featuring the best collegiate and post-graduate wrestlers along with Olympic hopefuls.  

Junior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville), the 11th seed at 165, will battle the ninth seed, Taylor Massa of Michigan, Sunday night for seventh place.

Santiago has won four of his six bouts, three of four on Saturday.  

Santiago is the first Bronc to place at Midlands since Doug Umbehauer '09 placed third in the 2008 Midlands.

In the consolations Sunday Santiago defeated Austin Wilson of Nebraska 7-5 before losing 3-2 to the eighth seed, Mark Lewandowski of Buffalo.

In the quarterfinals Saturday night, Santiago lost 9-2 to the third seed, Bubby Graham of Oklahoma. Santiago defeated Jim Wilson of Stanford 3-1 in the third round. Santiago defeated Josh Snook of Maryland 3-0 in the second round after winning 10-4 in the first round over Nick Fishback of Wisconsin Parkside

133 sophomore Jimmy Morris (Northport, NY/St. Anthony's) went 3-2. Morris lost 9-0 in the consolations late Sunday night against the top seed, Scotti Sentes of Central Michigan. Morris defeated Logan Artis of Illinois 10-6 in consolations Saturday.  Morris lost 5-0 to Laike Gardner of Lehigh in the third round. Morris pinned Joe Moita of Columbia in 2:51 of the second round. Morris won by default in the first round over the eighth seed, Levi Mele of Northwestern

184 sophomore Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) went 2-2. Morrison defeated Canaan Bethea of Penn 8-2 in consolations before losing 4-2 to Jake Waste of Buffalo late Saturday night. Morrison lost 15-0 to the second seed, Ben Bennett of Central Michigan in the third round. Morrison pinned Matt Gille of Wisconsin Parkside in 6:05 the second round after receiving a first round bye.

184 freshman Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) wrestled unattached and went 2-2. Wolfe lost 3-1 in sudden victory to the ninth seed, Mac Stoll of North Dakota, in the consolations late Saturday night. Wolfe won by medical forfeit over Pat Kissel of Purdue. Wolfe lost 11-0 to the top seed, Robert Hamlin of Lehigh in the third round. After receiving a first round bye Wolfe pinned Cole Shafer of Iowa State in 6:24 in the second round.

197 sophomore Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) went 2-2. In the consolations McNeil pinned Justin Ortega of Clarion in 1:24 and defeated David Prieto of Utah Valley 6-2 before losing 6-2 to Derrick Borlie of VA Tech.. McNeil lost 4-1 to the 11th seed, Jackson Hein of Wisconsin in the second round after receiving a first round bye.

157 senior Zac Cibula (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg Casco) was 1-1. Cibula lost to the ninth seed, Tommy Churchard of Purdue, 5-4 on a tie breaker in the second round. Cibula defeated Troy Hernandez of Penn 6-4 in the first round.

141 sophomore Vinny Fava (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park) went 1-2. In consolations Fava lost 4-2 to Matt Greene of Northwestern. Fava lost 10-2 to Brandon Nelson of Purdue in the second round. Fava won a 13-4 major decision in the first round over Justin Meyers of Northwestern

125 freshman Patrick Skinner (Freeport, NY/Kellenberg) was 0-2. In the consolations Skinner lost 17-3 to Jared Germaine of E. Michigan. Skinner was pinned by the 12th seed, Shane Gentry of Maryland in 2:39 in the second round after a first round bye.

174 junior James Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) went 0-2. In consolations Brundage lost 8-5 to Mike Dessino of Bloomsburg. Brundage received a first round bye and lost 7-4 to the fifth seed, Stephen West of Columbia in the second round.
