Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Meet
JERSEY CITY--Both the Rider University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Saint Peter's University on Saturday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meet in Jersey City.
For the Rider women, senior Kelly O'Connor (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) won the 200 free (1:59.47), 200 back (2:08.10) and 100 fly (59.78).
"Kelly is tough to beat," said head coach Steve Fletcher. "She has a high pain tolerance in training and a great attitude towards hard work. When it comes to racing tired in dual meets, it has been a luxury to rely on her competitiveness the last four years."
For the Rider men, senior Brian Molloy (Toms River/Toms River HS East) won the 50 free (21.82), the 500 free (4:43.69) and the 1000 free (10:02.88).
"With the team being knocked back with illness since Florida training, we needed Brian to represent us in the distance events Saturday, and he accepted the challenge," Fletcher said. "He's an experienced racer, and had responsibilities today that ran the entire spectrum of racing from the 1000 to the 50. He managed it well for the team."
Also for the Bronc women, junior Melanie Leonhard (Piscataway) won the 500 free (5:17.75) and 1000 free (10:44.38) and freshman diver Emma Billerbeck (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) won the one-meter (244.73) and three-meter (248.02).
Also for the Bronc men, senior Johnny Funk (Las Vegas, Nev./Southeast Career & Tech. Academy) won the 100 back (52.60) and 200 back (1:53.85).
Other women's results included sophomore Carlee Oswald (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) winning the 100 back (1:01.71), sophomore Rachel Brooker (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) winning the 200 fly (2:16.55) and freshman Taylor Shelley (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) winning the 200 IM (2:17.19).
In men's diving, Bronc freshman Wayco Bailey (Casper, Wyo./Natrona County HS) won the one-meter (314.18), qualifying for NCAA Zones and junior Trevor Hiller (Galloway Twp./Absegami) won the three-meter (302.48).
The men's 400 free relay of freshman Adam Phillips (Springville, Pa./Elk Lake), freshman Jeffrey Prichard (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), sophomore Zach DeLillo (Reading, Pa./Wilson) and Molloy won with a time of 3:13.48.
Rider swims again on January 26 in the final meet of the 2012-13 regular season, at Rutgers (women) with Fordham (men/women) and Yale (men).
The MAAC Championships are February 14-16 in Buffalo, New York at Erie Community College.
