Welcome Back Broncs

Students Return for Home Game Sunday Afternoon

The resident students return to the Rider campus this weekend to welcome back the Broncs in a Sunday afternoon game against Manhattan College.

The 4pm tip in the newly refurbished Alumni Gymnasium can be seen on the BroncSportsNetwork, with live video streaming on BroncVison and live stats on GameViewer.

Tickets can be purchased online by clicking the "TicketLeap" link in this story or in person on game day at the ticket window in the lobby of Alumni Gymnasium.  The ticket booth will open on 3 p.m. for Sunday's game.

Rider's five-game winning streak came to a screeching halt on Friday night with a 17-point loss to Canisius, a game in which Rider was out-rebounded 42-22.

The Broncs (11-10, 6-3 MAAC) will look to rebound from that loss Sunday afternoon against the 5-14 Jaspers.

Juniors Daniel Stewart (22 points, 16 rebounds) and Anthony Myles (13 points, career-high 14 rebounds) both compiled 'double-doubles' in the Rider win at Manhattan January 10.  Rider made eight of 12 foul shots in the final 1:12 of the game, five by senior Jonathon Thompson, who finished with eight points and four rebounds.

The Jaspers lost by 10 points at home to Loyola Friday night, 51-41. After Rider won at Manhattan the Jaspers beat Marist before being swept on the Western New York trip, losing by the same 64-60 score to both Niagara and Canisius.

Junior forward Rhamel Brown has emerged as the top Jasper, averaging 11.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Brown had 15 points and 11 rebounds against Rider this year.

Manhattan was one of the strongest basketball programs in the MAAC in the first half of the last decade, competing in either the NCAAs or the NIT four times in a five-year period.  Manhattan was in the 2003 and the 2004 NCAA tournaments and the 2002 and 2006 NIT.  In 2006 the Jaspers defeated FDU and Maryland in the NIT.

The Jaspers were 21-13 last year, 12-6 in the MAAC. As the third seed, Manhattan lost to the sixth seed, Siena, in the quarterfinals of the MAAC tournament but was rewarded for its 20-win season by an invitation to the Tournament, where the Jaspers beat Albany before losing to Fairfield.

The Broncs and Jaspers have met 40 times since the series began in 1929-30, with Rider winning 22, including 10 of the last 12. Since Rider joined the MAAC, the Broncs are 21-12 against the Jaspers, including 1-1 in post-season.  Rider won four of the meetings in a row before losing to the Jaspers last year here at Rider.

Today Rider looks to avenge that loss, along with the one Friday night.
