Women set Rider record in DMR
BOSTON, Mass.--The Rider University indoor track and field team competed in Boston University's Terrier Invitational Saturday.
The all-day event was held at BU's Track and Tennis Center.
"This meet is a great simulation for the IC4A and ECAC championships," said head coach Bob Hamer. "It gives the athletes the opportunity to compete at the same facility and against the same type of competition that they will see in March."
Before the men's meet began, the women's distance medley relay event was held as a continuation from the women's meet on Friday. The Rider women's team of senior Megan Elgin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks east), sophomore Ashley Edwards (Westfield), freshman Madeline Hummel (Marlton/Holy Cross) and sophomore Emily Ritter (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech) finished fourth in Rider record and ECAC qualifying time of 11:53.77.
The women's DMR started the day off great," said Hamer. "They all ran competitive and confident races and were rewarded not only with an ECAC qualifying mark but a Rider record as well."
For the Rider men, senior David Hightower (Easton, Pa/Easton) finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, running an 8.31. In the preliminary race, Hightower qualified for IC4A's with a time of 8.24. Senior Greg Wesh (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) ran for seventh place in the 800-meter run in IC4A qualifying time of 1:52.72.
Also for the Rider men, sophomore George Solujich (East Windsor/Notre Dame) earned an IC4A berth in the shot put, reaching 15.79 and placing 11th.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of junior Wilvenson Baptiste (Irvington), Wesh, freshman Darien Edwards (South Orange/St. Benedicts) and senior James Burroughs (West Orange) qualified for IC4A's placing 13th and running 3:18.07.
"Wesh and Baptiste both had an individual and replay qualifier," Hamer said. "Baptiste is quietly having a great season and I think he has some great performances still left in the bag. Greg is looking good and just needs to get in that right race and he will have that memorable performance that he is craving."
Baptiste also qualified for IC4A's in the 200-meter dash clocking 21.99 and finishing 27th and junior Joseph Carlin (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Tech.) made IC4As in the 800, clocking a 1:54.81 and finishing 27th.
"Overall, it was a decent day for the men's squad," Hamer added. "We achieved many IC4A qualifiers and some personal records (PRs) as well. We had a few opportunities to perform better and we missed out. We are going to have to improve in order to compete at the level that this team is capable of competing."
Both the Rider men and women will run in the New Balance Collegiate meet next Saturday at the New York Armory.
