Broncs Travel to Fairfield, Marist This Weekend

The Rider men's basketball team hits the road this weekend to take on Fairfield University and Marist College in a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games.

Rider (11-11, 6-4 MAAC) plays Fairfield (12-10, 4-6 MAAC) Friday night at 7pm at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yards in Bridgeport, CT. That game will be televised on SportsNet New York.

The Broncs play Marist (5-17, 2-9 MAAC) Sunday afternoon at 2pm.  Marist lost at Saint Peter's (7-14, 2-9 MAAC) Thursday night.

Fairfield is coming off a 61-54 win over Saint Peter's on Sunday, the second win in a row for the Stags, having defeated Marist 71-37 last Thursday night.  The two wins ended a five-game losing streak. Prior to the five-game losing streak the Stags had a six game winning streak, which started with the 65-52 win at Rider on December 9.

The Stags are led by senior All-MAAC guard Derek Needham, who is averaging 14.4 points per game.

The Broncs played Fairfield three times last year, defeating the Stags in Alumni Gym in the regular season finale before losing to Fairfield by two points in the MAAC quarterfinals. Rider lost by nine points at Fairfield last season.

Rider and Fairfield have met 51 times since the series began in 1951-52, with Rider winning 23, including seven of the last 13. Rider is 17-16 against Fairfield since joining the MAAC, including 1-1 in postseason.

Marist is led by senior guard Devin Price and sophomore guard Chavaughn Lewis, who are combining for 29.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.  6'10" junior forward Adam Kemp is adding 7.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

Marist has lost 10 of its last 11 games, the lone win coming against Saint Peter's on January 19 in Poughkeepsie.

The Broncs won five in a row before losing the last two home games.  The Broncs are led by juniors Anthony Myles and Daniel Stewart and senior Jonathon Thompson, who are combining for 34 points and 15 rebounds per game.

Rider lost by 20 points at Marist last year but came back to defeat the Red Foxes by 13 points at Rider.  Rider and Marist were Northeast Conference rivals for five years (1993-97) and both teams joined the MAAC for the 1997-98 season.

Rider and Marist have met 46 times since the series began in 1980-81, with Rider winning 24, including nine of the last 10 and 15 of the last 22. Since joining the MAAC, Rider is 19-13 against Marist, which includes 1-1 in postseason play.

Both the Fairfield and Marist games can be heard live on your FM radio (107.7 the Bronc) and on your computer (

Following this road trip Rider returns home to host first-place Niagara Thursday, November 7, as part of a doubleheader with the Rider women. The women host Fairfield at 5pm and the men host the Purple Eagles at 7:30.
