Broncs Host Sacred Heart, Drexel This Weekend
LAWRENCEVILLE-The Rider wrestling team will host former conference rival Sacred Heart Saturday at 12 noon and Drexel University in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet Sunday at 2pm.
Both matches in the newly refurbished Alumni Gymnasium can be seen on the BroncSportsNetwork, with live video streaming on BroncVison.
Tickets can be purchased online by clicking the "TicketLeap" link in this story or in person at the ticket window in the lobby of Alumni Gymnasium. The ticket booth will open at 11 a.m. for Saturday's match and 1 p.m. for Sunday's.
The Broncs (8-6, 2-2 CAA) are led by five Broncs who are currently ranked by the NCAA Coaches' Panel, one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, and a sixth wrestler who is ranked first in the CAA.
Rider junior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville), sophomore Jimmy Morris (Northport, NY/St. Anthony's), senior Zac Cibula (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg Casco), junior James Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) and sophomore Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) were among the NCAA ranked wrestlers, while freshman Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy) is currently ranked first in the CAA at 187.
Wolfe, who was expected to red-shirt this season until Rider's starting 184 was injured, defeated the top ranked 184 in the CAA and was named the CAA Rookie of the Week January 29. Wolfe owns a 19-9 overall record, 3-1 in the CAA.
Santiago is ranked 16th in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News and enters the weekend with a record of 24-6 overall, 12-2 in duals, and is the top ranked 165 in the CAA.
Morris is currently 24th at 133 and owns a 22-10 record as the second ranked 133 in the CAA, 10-4 in duals
The second ranked 157 in the CAA, Cibula is currently 27th and owns a record of 19-7, 7-2 in duals.
McNeil is currently 29th at 197 and is 16-12 overall and ranked third in the CAA.
Brundage is currently 31st at 174 with a 15-9 record. Brundage is ranked third in the CAA in his weight class.
Sacred Heart takes it 0-7 record to Princeton Friday night before coming to Rider. Rider defeated Sacred Heart 44-3 last season in Lancaster, PA in a tri-meet at Franklin & Marshall. Rider has won all 11 meetings with Sacred Heart since the series began in 2000-01.
Drexel (7-9, 3-2 CAA) is led by the top ranked 141 in the CAA, Frank Cimato, who is ranked 20th in the nation by W.I.N. Magazine and is 26-6 overall, 12-4 in duals and 5-0 in the CAA, and 197 Brandon Palik (20-3, 12-2 duals), who is ranked 20th in the nation by AWN.
Other key Dragons include 165 Conor Moran (14-13, 3-1 CAA), 125 Jake Goodwin (12-11, 2-1 CAA), 149 Shane Fenningham (15-9, 5-4 duals) and 157 Austin Sommer (12-7, 6-3 duals).
Rider beat Drexel 19-18 last year in Philadelphia. Rider and Drexel have now met 36 times since the series began in 1970-71 with Rider winning 28. The last time Drexel defeated Rider was during the 2006-07 season.
