LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University wrestling team won all five contested matches, four by pin to defeat Sacred Heart University on Saturday in a non-conference dual in Alumni Gymnasium. Rider returns to Alumni Gym to host Drexel Sunday.

"Sacred Heart is going through a rough time," said head coach Gary Taylor.  "I feel for them and I hope they continue to get healthy and get some more wrestlers back."

The Pioneers forfeited five of the 10 weight classes.

Freshman 125 Patrick Skinner (Freeport, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS) opened the action with an early take down and won by fall with 17 seconds left in the opening period.  For Skinner, it was his first collegiate win.

"This was really exciting," said Skinner.  "I knew that if I wrestled tough and wrestled my match, I would have a good chance.  Coming into the regular season, I was small for a 125 pounder and took some lumps, wrestling opponents in the top 20.  I struck with it and I've had great support from my teammates to get stronger and get better.  This year's experience will help me going into next season.  It feels great to share today with my teammates; throughout the losses, they have been there to pick me up.  To look over and see that they were just as excited as I was, it was a good feeling."

"I was really happy for Patrick," said Taylor.  "He was thrust into this role and it probably would have been better to hold him out for the season to get him stronger.  But he has been fighting hard all year and it was good to see him have success today.  The reaction of his teammates says it all; they respect a kid that has been working hard all year; he is going out and fighting, as hard as he can every match and the response they had shows how much they respect and how much the coaches respect what he is doing in the room every day."

Sophomore 133 Jimmy Morris (Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had an early 5-0 lead after a takedown and near fall and pinned his opponent at the 1:59 mark of the first period.  Morris, the second ranked 133 in the CAA, improved to 23-10 on the season.

Sophomore 141 Rob Cigna (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney) broke a 4-4 second period tie with a series of take downs and used two third period take downs and riding time for a 14-8 decision.  Cigna won for the fourth time this season and picked up his first victory at 141.

Junior 174 James Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) won by fall at 1:23 and sophomore 197 Donald McNeil Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) needed just 2:06 for a pin in the final bout of the day.  Brundage, the third ranked 174 in the CAA won for the 16th time and McNeil, the third ranked 197 in the CAA, won for the 17th time this season.

"When you know you are getting some forfeits, the other athletes competing have to be ready to go," said Taylor.  "Sacred Heart has wrestlers certainly capable of taking you down and causing problems if we weren't focused.  I thought, as a team, we did a good job of putting that aside and staying focused when they stepped on the mat."

Rider hosts Drexel University on Sunday in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet at 2pm.

The CAA match Sunday in the newly refurbished Alumni Gymnasium can be seen on the BroncSportsNetwork, with live video streaming on BroncVison.

Tickets can be purchased online by clicking the "TicketLeap" link in this story or in person at the ticket window in the lobby of Alumni Gymnasium.  The ticket booth will open at 1 p.m. for Sunday's dual meet.

"I expect a tough match on Sunday," Taylor added about facing the Dragons.  "We need to be very focused and be ready."
