Rider Hosts Marist, ESPN3 Sunday 4pm
Doubleheader Starts at 1pm with Women vs. Loyola
LAWRENCEVILLE-Rider's Alumni Gymnasium will host a basketball doubleheader broadcast on ESPN3 Sunday, with the Rider women hosting Loyola at 1pm and the Rider men hosting Marist at 4pm.
Tickets can be purchased online by clicking the "TicketLeap" link in this story or in person on game day at the ticket window in the lobby of Alumni Gymnasium. The ticket booth will open at 12 noon for Sunday's games.
The Marist Red Foxes (7-19, 4-11 MAAC) lost 57-54 to first place Niagara Friday night. Marist had a four-game losing streak snapped with wins over two of the top three teams in the MAAC, Iona (2 OT) and Loyola, before hosting Niagara.
Marist beat last place Saint Peter's on January 19, snapping an eight-game losing streak.
The Red Foxes are led by sophomore guard Chavaughn Lewis and senior guard Devon Price, who are combining for 29.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. 6'10" junior forward Adam Kemp compiled 52 points and 29 rebounds in the recent wins over Iona and Loyola, and scored 17 against Niagara on Friday. Kemp is averaging 9.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Price has not played the last three games.
Rider defeated Marist 64-58 in Poughkeepsie on February 3. In that game senior Jonathon Thompson scored 23 points, tying his career-high, making nine of 11 shots, including a career-high five of six three-pointers and grabbed six rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Junior Anthony Myles scored a reverse lay-up with 2:25 left to give Rider a 60-55 lead. Myles dished out a career-high five assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Myles made a three-pointer with 9:40 remaining to break a 47-47 tie. That was the sixth and final tie of the game. Myles made two foul shots with 4.6 seconds left for the final score.
The Broncs (14-13, 9-6 MAAC) are currently tied with Canisius for fourth place, behind Niagara (10-4), Loyola (10-5) and Iona (9-5).
Rider is coming off a 72-57 win over Saint Peter's on Thursday night. In that game junior Anthony Myles compiled 17 points, three rebounds and three assists and freshman Zedric Sadler scored a career-high 16 points, making a career-high four of five three-pointers. Senior Jonathon Thompson added 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. As a team Rider shot a season-best 59.1 percent from the field.
The Rider women are coming off a 73-61 win at Siena on Friday evening.
In that game, senior Sironda Chambers finished one off her career-high, scoring 23 points as the Broncs used a 14-0 run midway through the second half to secure the win.
The Broncs are led by junior MyNeshia McKenzie who is averaging 13.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
Rider and Loyola last met on January 13 when the Broncs stormed back from a 16-point deficit with 5:50 remaining in regulation to force overtime in the 81-74 win at Reitz Arena.
Loyola (10-14, 5-8 MAAC) is coming off a 54-34 win against Manhattan on Friday evening.
The 'Hounds are led by Katie Sheahin who is averaging 14.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
Loyola is making its last MAAC visit to Alumni Gym as the 'Hounds are joining the Patriot League in 2013-14.
Sunday will also be Rider's annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Prior to the basketball game, the Rider Department of Athletics will conduct an all-sports clinic in the Student Recreation Center for all kids age 5-18. The clinic begins at 10:30am.
