STATE COLLEGE, PA-The Broncs took on the number one team in the nation Sunday and were shut out by the Nittany Lions. "We asked our wrestlers to wrestle hard, to show a lot of heart, and I think they did that," said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.
PSU (12-1) picked up five pins and three major decisions on the day with nine wrestlers ranked among the top 14 in the nation in their respective weight classes. "My main concern was that we would be intimidated and I don't think that happened," Taylor said. "We showed a lot of heart today."
Cibula battled the fifth ranked 157 in the nation and Velasco battled the twelfth ranked wrestler.
"Zac gave him a good match and I think that can help him down the road," Taylor said.
Junior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) took on the Most Outstanding Wrestler from the NCAAs last year. "Ramon took him down," Taylor said, "so he can build on that. He was in some good scrambles with him and he fought hard."
Freshman Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) faced the top ranked wrestler in the nation, something most freshmen don't get the opportunity to do. "There is no doubt that that will help him," Taylor said. "It is great for our young wrestlers to realize that there is another level of toughness. The opportunity to wrestle a defending national champion is one to remember for the rest of your life. There is no one who is going to intimate him after that."
Rider (10-7) hosts Boston University in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet Saturday at 1pm.
