Broncs Home Opener Tuesday
Rider Plays on Sonny Pittaro Field at 3pm
LAWRENCEVILLE-The Rider baseball team (5-1), off to its best start in 23 years and fresh off a three-game sweep of Radford of the highly respected Big South Conference, plays the home opener Tuesday, March 5 at 3pm against Lafayette.
"We're getting better but we have a long way to go," said Rider head coach Barry Davis. "We played pretty well against a good team but it is early in the season, so we can't get too excited about this. But I'm certainly pleased."
Rider is led by senior third baseman Adam Wayman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial), junior outfielder Jerry Mulderig, sophomore shortstop Mike Parsons (Liverpool, NY) and sophomore second baseman Greg Fazio (Far Hills/Ridge).
Wayman is batting .458 with 11 hits, including four doubles and six RBI. Mulderig is batting .304 with seven hits and five RBI. Parsons has seven hits, including four doubles and is batting .412 with six runs scored. Fazio is batting .304 with seven hits and has 17 assists in the field.
Sophomore lefty Eric Thomas (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown Area) will be making his 2013 debut on the mound. As a rookie last year Thomas made 20 appearances in relief, third most on the team, and held opponents to a .176 batting average, best on the team. Thomas compiled 25 strikeouts in 24.2 innings last year.
Lafayette (0-6) began the season at Davidson and at Campbell after losing the opener to Georgetown.
The 1991 Broncs began the season 12-1-1 and finished with 32 wins and an at large bid to the NCAA Regional at Wichita State.
