Rider's Thompson MAAC Player of Week

LAWRENCEVILLE-Rider University senior guard Jonathon Thompson (Orlando, Fla./Jones) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week for all games played the final week of the regular season.

In two wins on the road last week, Thompson averaged 18 points, 3.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and shot 12 for 18 from the field (.667), including five for seven from three-point, and was seven of 12 from the foul line.

"Jon did a great job of leading our team to two victories this past week in Buffalo, helping us to clinch the number two seed," said Rider head coach Kevin Baggett. "I am very happy he is reaping the rewards of his hard labor with receiving another reward as the MAAC Player of the week."

In Rider's win at first place Niagara, the Broncs trailed 44-42 before going on a 15-1 run, eight points by Thompson, to take a 57-45 lead with 8:00 left to play in the 68-59 win. Thompson made three of four foul shots in the final minute to preserve the victory and finished with 25 points, one shy of his career high.

In the win at Canisius, Thompson scored with 10:19 left to cut the Canisius lead to 50-49 in the 65-61 victory. Thompson finished with 11 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals in 37 minutes of work.

For the season Thompson leads Rider in scoring (12.8), assists (99), steals (45) and minutes played (33.6) and leads the MAAC in three-point field goal percentage (43.1).

A Second Team All-MAAC selection, Thompson enters the tournament eighth in career assists at Rider with 366 and 906 points.

Thompson was also named the College Sports  MAAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his exceptional performance during the past week's action. College Sports Madness identifies the players who have made the greatest impact to their team from each conference and on a national basis each Monday.

The Broncs are the second seed and play Saturday at 7:30 in the MAAC quarterfinals against either the seventh seed, Fairfield, or the 10th seed, Saint Peter's.
