GLEN ALLEN, Virginia--The Rider University field hockey team was one of 63 Division I teams recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) for a grade point average over a 3.00 it was recently announced.
Rider, the 2012 champions of the Northeast Conference and an NCAA Play-In qualifier, had 11 players honored by the NEC for a grade point average over a 3.20 and 10 of those players earned NFHCA National Academic recognition for a g.p.a. over a 3.30.
In the 2012 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Team grade point average awards, Rider earned a 3.26 on a 4.00 scale after earning a 3.37 grade point average last season.
This was accomplished while the Broncs were winning their fourth straight NEC regular season title with a 6-1 record and Rider went on to win the NEC tournament championship for the third straight time, advancing to the NCAA Play-In game at UMass and finishing with an overall record of 15-6.
Broncs earning over a 3.20 grade point average include seniors Jackie Adams (Medford Lakes/Shawnee) and Gabby Burgo (Collingswood), juniors Kristine Dougherty (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy), Alicia Govannicci (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Shari Grinceri (Hammonton/St. Joseph's) and sophomores Katie Fanning (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan), Dezarae Fillmyer (Roebling/Florence), Eefje Kok (Berkel Enschot, Netherlands), Laura McCormick (West Windsor/WW-P South), Karly Ossowski (New Egypt) and Rachel Schwab (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts).
McCormick is an Elementary Education/Psychology major with a 3.85 grade point average, Adams is a Speech & Interpersonal Communication major with a 3.72 g.p.a., Fanning is an Elementary Education/Psychology major with a 3.69 grade point average, Ossowski is a Communication major with a 3.54 g.p.a. and Schwab is a Human Resource Management major with a 3.49 grade point average.
Dougherty is a Finance major with a 3.48 g.p.a., Govannicci is an Elementary Education/Psychology major with a 3.46 grade point average, Kok is a Business Administration/International Business major with a 3.42 g.p.a., Fillmyer is an Elementary Education/History major with a 3.38 grade point average, Burgo is a Secondary Education/Mathematics major with a 3.35 g.p.a., and Grinceri is a Psychology major with a 3.28 grade point average.
Adams and Burgo are four-time NFHCA Academic honorees.
Rider has advanced to the four-team NEC playoffs in all 13 seasons under head coach Lori Hussong and Hussong has led 10 of her Rider teams to either an NEC Championship (2012, 2011, 2010, 2004, 2002, 2000) or an NEC Regular Season Title (2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003, 2001).
