Rider's Smith MAAC Pitcher of Week, Again
LAWRENCEVILLE-For the second consecutive week, Rider senior Tyler Smith was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of Week.
Smith (Westmont/Haddon Twp.), a 6'2", 220 pound lefty, took the hill in the first game of the three-game series at the University of South Carolina.
Against the sixth ranked SC Gamecocks (now ranked fifth) and in front of over 7,000 spectators, Smith pitched all eight innings and had eight strikeouts. He walked just one batter and allowed just one earned run on seven hits, in a 2-0 loss.
"Tyler put together a superb performance at South Carolina," said Rider head coach Barry Davis. "He set the tone for our team to play well throughout the series."
Rider (6-4) lost 9-5 in the second game to SC (13-2) and the third game 1-0.
On the season, Smith (2-1) owns a 1.29 earned run average with 21 strikeouts in 21 innings with just three walks.
Smith was a 2012 Preseason All-American closer before moving to the starting rotation toward the end of last season.
Smith is now 16-13 with 27 saves in his career, 6-5 as a starter.
The Broncs will now travel to Wilson, NC to play St. Bonaventure in a four-game neutral site series March 15-17, before returning to South Carolina to play at series at Campbell.
