MAAC Baseball Begins
Rider Hosts Fairfield Friday, Saturday
LAWRENCEVILLE-The Rider University baseball team will host Fairfield University this weekend in the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series of the 2013 season.
The first MAAC game will be played Friday at 3pm, followed by a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday.
Rider (11-9, 0-0 MAAC) has won its last three games and is the last MAAC team to begin conference play.
Fairfield (7-11, 1-2 MAAC) lost two of three games with Siena last weekend to begin MAAC play.
Last year Fairfield finished in third place in the MAAC (14-10) and is picked to finish fifth this year.
The Stags are currently fourth in the MAAC in batting average (.255), sixth in earned run average (5.16) and seventh in runs scored (64).
Stag outfielder Jack Giannini is batting .368 with 25 hits in 17 games. His total of 25 hits is fifth best in the MAAC.
Rider finished in fourth place last year (13-11) and is picked to finish third this year.
The Broncs pitchers currently lead the MAAC in earned run average (3.57) and the hitters are second in runs scored (95) and stolen bases and third in batting average (.262).
Jerry Mulderig leads Rider in batting average (.333) and leads the MAAC in stolen bases (11 for 13). Rider pitcher Tyler Smith leads the conference in strikeouts (34 Ks in 34 innings) and leads Rider in earned run average (1.32).
On Saturday the Rider SAAC Community Service Project will take place at Sonny Pittaro Field, consisting of collecting toiletries and canned foods for HomeFront.
Saturday's doubleheader will also be broadcast on the radio on 107.7 the Bronc.
