Rider Track & Field Home Saturday

The Bronc track & field teams will be home Saturday to host the 16-team Rider Invitational.

“Both teams (men and women) have had a nice start to the season,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. “We are looking forward to getting the opportunity to compete at our home facility with the new track surface.”

The Rider men will be led by James Burroughs, senior David Hightower (Easton, Pa/Easton), junior Wilvenson Baptiste (Irvington), senior Greg Wesh (Hatboro, Pa/Hatboro-Horsham), sophomore George Solujich (East Windsor/Notre Dame), freshman Charles Wilks (Secane, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and senior Anthony DeFranco (Berkeley Heights/Governor Livingston).

Burroughs won the 110 hurdles at VCU (14.41) and at Lafayette’s 8-Way, and placed second in the 400 hurdles (55.25) in both meets.

Hightower will be Burroughs’ toughest competition in the hurdles.  Baptiste runs the 200, Wesh runs the 1500, Solujich will lead the shot put and discus competitors along with Wilks, and DeFranco is the pole vaulter.

The Rider women will be led by sophomore Emily Ritter (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech), freshman Dashana Ransome (Irvington), freshman Miranda Roberts (Sewell/Washington Twp.), senior Nicole Tassello (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern)  and senior Mia Riley (West Caldwell/James Caldwell).

Ritter earned All-East in the mile during the indoor season, breaking the Rider record by seven seconds (4:50.01) and outdoor she has won the 800m (2:18.01) at VCO and the 3,000m (9:59.74) at Lafayette’s 8-Way. At the Colonial Relays she set a Rider record in the 1500 (4:31.60).

Tassello (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) recently won the 10k (37:15.14) for the second straight year at the Colonial relays.

Ransome (Irvington) set a Rider record in the 100-meter hurdles in IC4A qualifying time (14.41) earlier this spring and Roberts set a Rider record in the pole vault (8.75) this spring.

Riley is the veteran of the team and runs the 100 and 200.

“The new track surface should provide for a great chance for some fast performances,” Hamer said. “Our athletes are very comfortable at our facility and I am looking forward to seeing some breakout performances.”

The first events, the pole vault, hammer, high jump and shot put, begin at 11:30 am. The running events begin at 12 noon with the 3000m steeplechase.
