Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Doubleheader
RIVERDALE, N.Y.—The Rider University softball team lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Manhattan College on Saturday afternoon.
For Rider in the opener, the Broncs had two hits each from junior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden/New Rochelle), freshman Dana Sensi (Allentown) and Kim Valdes but could not overcome an 11-run Jasper second inning that featured two Rider errors.
"The first game kind of got away from us," said head coach Tricia Carroll. "We tried to do a little more than the game was giving us."
Sophomore Amanda Irving (Westminster, Md./Westminster) knocked in Washington with Rider’s only run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
In the nightcap, Irving had two of Rider’s four hits with Manhattan breaking a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Irving gave Rider a 1-0 first inning lead with an RBI single, scoring Sensi who singled down the left field line with two outs.
"The second game, we were competitive right until the last inning," said Carroll. "We just couldn't get anything going offensively."
Freshman Ali Meagher (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) went six innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs in the second game.
"Ali is our only pitcher right now," said Carroll. "Obviously that is not what we expected and it could be that way for the rest of the year. She handled herself well today in a tough situation."
The Broncs and Jaspers have met 32 times with Rider winning 16 in the all-time series. Last season, Rider swept Manhattan in Lawrenceville, winning 4-0 and 6-4. Rider and Manhattan met in 2011 in Riverdale, when the Jaspers swept the two-game set, 1-0 and 6-3, despite the Broncs out-hitting the Jaspers in both games. Rider and Manhattan split two games in Lawrenceville in 2010 with the Broncs winning 7-5 after losing 12-0 in the opener. In 2009, the teams split two MAAC games in Riverdale. In 2008 and 2007, the teams also split their two conference games. Manhattan swept Rider in 2006 and 2005 and the teams split in 2004.
