Rider University 9, LIU Brooklyn 4

LAWRENCEVILLE—Senior Adam Wayman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) had three hits and two RBI to lead Rider to victory over LIU Brooklyn Wednesday afternoon.

“Adam played great,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.  “He gives us a good at bat every time. He can do a lot of things for us.”

“I felt a lot better today,” said Wayman.

The three hits Wednesday gives Wayman 203 for his career, ninth most ever at Rider.  “He’s been consistent for four years,” Davis said.

Wayman homered in a MAAC win at defending champion Manhattan for his 200th hit. “To get it that way, it was not only a monumental hit for his career but it was also a big hit for us at the time, winning a big game,” Davis said.

“I had no idea it was the 200th hit,” Wayman said of his home run on Sunday.  “My Mother knew and she came over and told me and they got the ball for me.  To rank with the guys on that list, some I played with, and they’re great players, it’s a pretty good feeling.”

Rider (21-14) scored three runs in the sixth inning on four hits and an LIU error to break a 3-3 tie, the biggest hit an RBI single by sophomore Mike Parsons (Liverpool, NY).

Parson, batting out of the leadoff spot, was also hit by a pitch twice to reach base three times. Parsons has now reached base in nine straight games.  With Parsons leading off the Broncs are now 9-4

LIU Brooklyn (10-22) scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score at 3-3.

Rider junior Kyle Kennett (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) started and went five innings, allowing just two hits and left the game with a 3-1 lead. “He gave us a chance to win, that’s all you can ask of a starter,” Davis said. “He throws strikes.”

Rider is now 7-0 in Kennett’s nine career starts.

“Kyle pitched great,’ Davis said.  “We had a long inning in the bottom of the fifth so I probably should not have sent him back out there to start the sixth.”

The Broncs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Wayman, and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South). Rider went up 3-1 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Jerry Mulderig (Langhorne, PA/Council Rock South).

Rider added three runs in the eighth inning on three hits, including a two-run single by junior Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton). Crescenzo and Thomas each had two of Rider’s 10 hits.

Rider lost 10-8 at LIU Brooklyn last year, the first time the Blackbirds beat the Broncs since 2006.

When it was known as Long Island University, LIU came to Lawrenceville three times in 2010, with the Broncs winning all three.

Rider leads the all-time series, that began in 1941, 27-13.

The Broncs and Blackbirds were Northeast Conference rivals for five years. Rider defeated LIU 7-4 in the 1994 NEC Title Game, the Broncs beat the Blackbirds 4-3 in the 1995 NEC Title Game and Rider beat LIU 14-1 in the 1996 NEC Title Game.

Rider returns to conference action this weekend when the Broncs host Saint Peter’s in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series beginning with a 12 noon doubleheader Saturday.

“We have another tough series,” Davis said.  “Saint Peter’s (5-4 in MAAC) is playing very well right now. They’re in the mix. They could have easily won two of the three games we played at their place last year so we know what we’re in for.”

“Our pitching has been great,” Wayman said. “We just have to come out and be ready to play, and put some hits together.”
