LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.—The Rider University softball team was swept in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader, losing at the Siena Saints 16-0 and 7-6 on Saturday afternoon in Loudonville.
In the second game, trailing 6-4 with two outs in the top of the seventh, sophomore Gina McCool (Marlton/Cherokee) hit an RBI double and junior Mary Rossi (Trenton/Notre Dame) followed with an RBI single to tie the game 6-6.
"We scored big runs in the seventh to tie it," said head coach Tricia Carroll. "Siena's bats were just too much to overcome. After what we did in the opener, it was good to see us fight and battle in the second game."
Siena trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, before scoring three times to take a 6-4 lead.
Rider trailed 2-0 after one inning before McCool hit an RBI single in the top of the second, cutting the deficit in half.
The Broncs tied the score 2-2 in the top of the third when freshman Emily Cottrell (Beachwood/Toms River HS South) hit a two-out RBI single. Cottrell had two hits in the second game.
Rider took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on a fielder’s choice and increased the lead to 4-2 on a double play ground out in the fifth inning.
Siena scored one in the fifth to get to within 4-3.
Freshman Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla./King's Academy) and sophomore Amanda Irving (Westminster, Md./Westminster) each had two of Rider’s 10 hits in the second game with Valdes scoring two of the six Bronc runs.
Freshman Ali Meagher (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) took the loss for Rider, working all 6 1/3 innings and allowed only four earned runs as Siena took advantage of three Bronc errors.
