Rider University 5, Lafayette College 4
EASTON, Pa.—Despite being out-hit by the host Leopards, the Rider University softball team won a non-conference game at Lafayette College on Tuesday afternoon at Metzgar Fields.
"After the two emotional conference series (two one-run games, and two walk off loses), I thought we played a little flat," said head coach Tricia Carroll. "It wasn't pretty but we got the win."
Trailing 2-1, Rider rallied with three runs in the top of the third inning, including an RBI double by freshman Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla./King's Academy) and an RBI triple from freshman Emily Cottrell (Beachwood/Toms River HS South), putting the Broncs back in the lead 4-2. Cottrell had two hits and three RBI in the game.
"Emily hit the ball hard," Carroll said.
The Leopards used three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to plate two runs, cutting the deficit to 5-4.
Rider took a 1-0 first inning lead on an RBI single by Valdes after junior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden/New Rochelle) reached on an error. Washington scored twice in the game and also had two hits and two stolen bases and she leads the team in hits (51), run scored (31) and stolen bases (23).
"Kehli is dangerous on the bases," Carroll said. "Her getting two steals was nice and set up our scoring."
Lafayette put together four hits in the bottom of the first inning, including an RBI double and RBI single to take a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Ali Meagher (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) threw a complete game, with one strikeout, scattering 11 hits to record her second win of the season.
"Ali was tired but she hung in there," Carroll said. "She threw 24 innings this past weekend but she battled and got the job done."
Rider (8-36) improved to 4-6 this season in one-run games.
"It's nice to get a one-run win for a change," Carroll added.
This was the 61st meeting between Rider and Lafayette with the Broncs winning for the 44th time.
Last season, Rider won 9-1 and 13-5 in Lawrenceville over the Leopards. Lafayette defeated Rider at the Rebel Spring Games on March 16, 2011 by a 5-2 score and won 6-5 in 10 innings at the Rebel Games on March 18, 2010. The teams met in Lawrenceville on March 11, 2009 with Lafayette winning the opener 7-5 and Rider taking the nightcap 6-0. The teams last met in Easton, Pa., on April 1, 2008 when the Leopards swept the doubleheader, 8-0 and 9-1.
Rider hosts Niagara University in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Herb and Joan Young Field on Saturday at 1pm.
