Rider Hosts Fairfield Saturday
LAWRENCEVILLE—With first place on the line in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Rider University softball team will play the final games of the 2013 regular season Saturday, when the Broncs host Fairfield University in a MAAC doubleheader.
First pitch is scheduled for 1pm at Herb and Joan Young Field.
Fairfield enters play 24-19, having won two straight and the Stags are tied for first place in the MAAC at 10-4 with Marist. The Red Foxes swept the Stags on April 7 in Poughkeepsie, New York. Marist completes the regular season against Siena (8-4 MAAC) with the Saints having four conference games remaining, entering the weekend.
Iona (8-6 MAAC), along with Manhattan (9-7 MAAC) and Niagara (9-7 MAAC) are all vying for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Rider (8-39, 3-11 MAAC) continues to be led by junior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden/New Rochelle) who leads the team in hitting (.360), hits (54) and stolen bases (23).
A Second Team All-MAAC selection last season, Washington recently moved into 25th place all-time on Rider’s career hit list with 140 and her .360 average this season is currently sixth in the MAAC.
Rookie Dana Sensi (Allentown) continues her strong play and is batting .318 in 47 games (all starts) and she leads the team in doubles (7), home runs (6) and RBI (27).
In the circle, freshman Ali Meagher (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) is the last healthy pitcher standing and leads the Broncs in innings pitched in MAAC play with 67.
Sophomore Amanda Irving (Westminster, Md./Westminster) leads the Broncs with a .459 average (17/37) in MAAC competition.
Last season, Rider was swept at Fairfield, 1-0 and 7-2. Fairfield swept Rider in Lawrenceville in 2011, winning 3-0 and 5-2 in eight innings. Fairfield and Rider have met 34 times in a series that began in 1998 with the Broncs winning nine times. Rider last defeated the Stags in 2010, sweeping a MAAC doubleheader in Connecticut 2-0 (eight innings) and 12-2 in the final games of the 2010 season.
