Final Home Game Today
Broncs Host La Salle 3pm
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider baseball team will play on Sonny Pittaro Field today for the final time in 2013 when the Broncs host La Salle University at 3pm.
Rider (33-17) has won seven in a row, the longest winning streak since winning 10 straight in 2010, the final seven games of the regular season and then three straight in the 2010 MAAC Playoffs.
The Broncs look to break the program record for regular season wins, set in 2010 and tied in 2011 and again yesterday with Rider’s victory over Iona. The record for overall wins in a season is 36, set in 2010 when Rider won the MAAC Championship.
Rider beat La Salle 10-4 in the last meeting between these two teams, in 2011 at Rider. The Broncs lost at La Salle 12-10 on a two-out, three-run, walk-off extra-inning home run in 2010.
Rider and La Salle were East Coast Conference rivals in the 1970s and early 1980s. The two teams have met 50 times since the series began in 1968 with Rider winning 32. La Salle defeated Rider in the 1985 NCAA East Regional at South Carolina.
Following graduation first place Rider (17-4) will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY to take on second place Marist (15-6) in the final series of the season. Rider has won its first seven MAAC series but only needs to win one of the three games at Marist this weekend to win its first MAAC regular season title. Rider would have to lose all three games to Marist to drop to second place.
Canisius and Siena are also in the MAAC tournament, which Rider is hosting May 23-26 at ARM & HAMMER Park, home of the Trenton Thunder. The official pairings will be announced on Monday, May 20. As tournament host, Rider will play Thursday at 7pm in the first round.
