Rider Adds Transfer Deutsch
LAWRENCEVILLE—Robert Deutsch of Cherry Hill, NJ is transferring from Old Dominion University to Rider University to further his education and wrestling career, Rider head coach Gary Taylor announced.
“We at Rider are very excited that Robert has decided to continue his wrestling career at Rider University,” said Taylor, the second most winningest active coach in the NCAA with 390 victories at Rider. “Rob was an NCAA qualifier in this, his redshirt freshman year and won 29 matches this past season. We believe that his future is bright and the sky is the limit due to his strong work ethic and determination.”
The 2013 Colonial Athletic Association runner-up at 125 pounds, Deutsch was an NCAA qualifier this year as a red-shirt freshman, finishing the season with a 29-11 record, including 6-2 in the CAA. Six of the 29 wins came over other eventual NCAA Qualifiers.
“Rob is a hard-nosed wrestler who takes his wrestling seriously,” said Taylor, who has coached 13 All-Americans and 64 individual conference champions at Rider. “He is aggressive and always looking to score and has a goal to win an NCAA Championship.”
While competing unattached in 2011-12, Deutsch compiled a 23-9 record, placing third at both the Cleveland State Open and the National Collegiate Open.
As a senior at Eastern Regional High School, Deutsch compiled a 42-0 record, winning his second New Jersey State Championship as the South Jersey Wrestler of the Year. In addition to his two State Titles Deutsch also finished second and third at States in his scholastic career, which including 155 victories, tied for most in South Jersey Wrestling history.
“Robert was one of the most successful high school wrestlers coming out of NJ in recent years,” Taylor said. “He was a four-time place winner and a two-time NJ State Champion and he also won the always tough and prestigious Beast of the East Tournament.”
Deutsch is the third former NJ State Champion Rider is adding to its 2013-14 roster, joining B.J. Clagon of Toms River, a senior at Toms River High School South, and Wayne Stinson of Wrightstown, NJ, a senior at Northern Burlington High School.
Rider joins the Eastern Wrestling League for the 2013-14 season.
