Rider’s Cibula Honored by NWCA for Academics
Manheim, Pa. -- The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has announced its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 Teams and Individual All-Academic wrestling team for the 2012-13 wrestling season.
On this year's Individual All-Academic Team there are 82 total athletes, four NCAA Champions, four NCAA Runner-Ups, 21 All-Americans, and 72 NCAA qualifiers.
Rider senior Zac Cibula (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg Casco) is one of those 72 NCAA Qualifiers.
A graduate student at Rider, Cibula advanced to the second round of the championship bracket at nationals this year when he pinned the ninth seeded 157 in 2:14.
“The entire coaching staff is very proud of Zac for being named to the 2012-13 All Academic wrestling team,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “It has been a privilege to coach Zac over the past five years. He accomplished this academic honor with the same work ethic that brought him honors in the sport of wrestling. We are proud of Zac and his accomplishments and wish him much success in his future.”
“We are very proud of Zac, he has always been a hard worker in the classroom and on the mat,” said associate head coach John Hangey.
Cibula (23-10) placed runner-up at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships this year and made his second trip to Nationals. Cibula was the 2011 CAA Championships' Most Outstanding Performer, and competed in the NCAAs hosted by Rider in Philadelphia.
"The NWCA All-Academic Team and Individual Team is one of the best acknowledgements that we can give to our coaches and athletes at the end of a physically grueling season,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "These young men have proved that they are not only talented competitors but are leaders in the classroom as well. The NWCA Board of Directors and staff look forward to watching these student-athletes continue their success at the collegiate level and eventually as the leaders of the future once they earn their college degrees.”
