Hightower Ends Season At NCAA Regional

LAWRENCEVILLE—Senior David Hightower (Easton, Pa./Easton) of the Rider University track and field team competed at  the NCAA East Championship Regional, hosted by North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, North Carolina, May 23-25.

On Saturday, in the quarterfinals Hightower placed 20th in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.23, completing his Rider career.

“Unfortunately for David, he needed to run a clean race to advance,” said head coach Bob Hamer.  “He hit the first hurdle and then he was out of rhythm for the remainder of the race.  He was trying to catch up and started hitting more hurdles.”

Hightower ran a program-record 13.93 in the 110m hurdles to finish fifth in his heat and 14th overall on Friday night.  The old Rider record of 14.04 was set in 1988 by Rider Hall of Famer Charles Lackey.

The meet took place on Irwin Belk Track inside of Aggie Stadium.

A three-time All-East performer, Hightower has the 38th fastest time (of 48 declared) in the 110 meter hurdles, running 14.10 in the preliminaries at the IC4A championships May 12 in Princeton.

“David had a great career,” said Hamer, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Coach of the Year.  “:He has cemented himself as one of the best ever to wear a Rider singlet.  He had a great race yesterday and needed that same race today to advance.  He will definitely be missed and he did a great job mentoring the younger members of the team.”

Athletes advancing from this meet and the West meet (Austin, Texas) will compete at the 2013 NCAA outdoor championships in Eugene, Oregon June 3-8.
