Smith, Wayman All-Tournament
MERCER COUNTY—Rider University seniors Tyler Smith and Adam Wayman were named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Tournament team, it was announced at the conclusion of the Championship Tournament, at ARM & HAMMER Park, home of the Trenton Thunder.
“Well deserved,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
Smith (Westmont/Haddon Twp.) pitched seven innings in the first round victory over eventual runner-up Siena, allowing just one unearned run while striking out nine.
“Smith was very good,” Davis said. “He did a great job.”
Wayman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) batted .467 in the tournament, collecting seven hits, including a home run and two doubles and had six RBI in the three games.
The regular season All-MAAC third baseman, Wayman hit a three-run home run, his third hit of the game, to give Rider a 7-1 lead in the extra-inning loss to Siena. He threw out the potential winning run at the plate in the ninth for the third out.
Wayman had 16 assists, including several spectacular plays in the tournament, starting two double plays along with five put outs.
“Wayman epitomizes what we talk about as far as being a player in big games,” Davis said. “He made every play, he made spectacular plays, He had big hits, the home run. He’s been a leader, a true captain.”
Wayman graduates with 234 career hits, fifth most ever at Rider, 139 runs, 10th most ever at Rider and 126 RBI, 12th most ever at Rider.
A Second Team All-MAAC selection this year, Smith (7-5) now ranks fourth in career wins at Rider with 21. The former All-East closer already ranks second in career saves (27) and owns the Rider records for appearances in a season and a career (97).
In MAAC postseason play Smith had two wins and two saves in his career. In 2010 he saved the MAAC Title Game as a freshman closer.
