Rider’s Smith S. Jersey Player of Year
GLASSBORO, NJ—Rider University graduate Tyler Smith ’13 was named the Division I College Baseball Player of the Year by the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association.
Smith (Westmont/Haddon Twp.) was honored at a banquet announcing his award June 6.
The 2013 Bob Koehler Award winner as Rider’s Pitcher of the Year, Smith was a Second Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference selection this year, leading Rider to the MAAC regular season title.
This year Smith won seven games and had a 3.10 earned run average. He compiled 82 strikeouts in 93 innings, second most in the MAAC.
Smith capped off his senior year and career by being named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team. In the Championship tournament Smith struck out nine Siena batters in seven innings and did not allow an earned run in Rider’s first round tournament victory.
The win was the 21st of Smith’s career, fourth most ever at Rider.
A three-time MAAC All-Academic team member, Smith also graduated second in career saves with 27 and is the only Rider pitcher to compile both 20 wins and 20 saves.
The former All-East closer holds Rider records for saves in a season (15), appearances in a season (31) and appearances in a career (97).
In his four years he had two wins and two saves in post-season play.
In Smith’s four years Rider won 126 games and played in four MAAC Championship tournaments, winning one, and played in an NCAA Regional.
