Rider’s Sowa ECAC Honors

LAWRENCEVILLE—Rider University sophomore pitcher Kurt Sowa was named to the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Second Team, it was announced today.

This season Sowa (Bensalem, Pa./Fr. Judge) won a Rider-record 11 games (11-1), 14th most in the nation.  He allowed just 5.79 hits per nine innings pitched, 10th best in the nation. Opponents batted just .180 against him.

"The award is well deserved," said Barry Davis who was named MAAC Coach of the Year.  "We could not have had the season we had if it wasn't for Kurt."

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 7-0 in conference play, Sowa was also a First Team All-New Jersey selection, an American Baseball Coaches/RAWLINGS Second Team All-East Region honoree and was a member of the MAAC All-Academic team.

Sowa struck out 54 batters in 79 innings and had two complete games, including a shutout.

"Pitching coach Jaime Steward also deserves a lot of credit," Davis added.  "He has done a tremendous job with all of our pitchers."

In his two-year Rider career Sowa owns a collegiate record of 16-5.
