Rider Grad Ryan Thompson Playing for
Washington Wizards in NBA Summer League
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA--Rider University graduate Ryan Thompson '10 is playing with the Washington Wizards in the 2013 NBA Summer League.
The NBA Summer League is the NBA's yearly summer showcase. All 30 NBA teams, along with a team of NBA D-League All-Stars, compete in games hosted in Orlando and Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas league will feature 22 teams competing in a 61-game schedule from July 12-22 at the Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
This summer's event will feature the debut of a tournament style schedule that will crown the first ever NBA Summer League Champion on Monday, July 22. Teams will compete in three preliminary round games from July 12-16 before being seeded in a tournament running through the Championship Game on July 22. Each team is guaranteed to play at least five games.
In the opener for Washinton on Saturday, Thompson had four points on two for three shooting with a rebound in 9:49 off the bench as the Wizards lost to Golden State 56-52.
On Sunday, Thompson played 10:57 and scored four points while pulling down an offensive rebound as Washington lost to the New York Knicks 82-69.
On Tuesday, Washington picked up its first win, defeating Denver 97-69 with Thompson scoring 10 points and pulling down three rebounds in 24:28 of playing time.
On Wednesday, Memphis defeated the Wizards 90-83 with Thompson compiling two points and three rebounds in 16:54.
On Friday, Thompson had eight points in 20:54 in a 78-77 win over New Orleans.
Thompson, the brother of Jason Thompson (Sacramento Kings), played for the Boston Celtics and the Kings in past NBA Summer Leagues and participated in the training camp of the Utah Jazz in 2010 and also played for the Utah Flash in the NBA D-League.
This past season, the 6-6 Thompson played overseas in Belgium for team Aalstar where he averaged 18.3 points per game (31 games) and he averaged 15.1 points per game during the 10-game EuroChallege season.
In 2011, Thompson played in Italy for Centrale del Latte Brescia.
Thompson is the only Rider player to rank in the top 10 in career points (1,879-third), career assists (393-sixth) and career rebounds (734-seventh).
Ryan’s older brother Jason is a 2008 Rider graduate and was the 12th pick in the 2008 draft, chosen by Sacramento. In five seasons in the NBA with the Kings, Jason has played in 378 games and is averaging 10.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 27 minutes played per game.
