2013-14 Rider University Non-Conference Schedule

LAWRENCEVILLE—Trips to the Silicon Valley, Tippecanoe and the Main Line too, highlight the non-conference portion of the 2013-14 Rider University men’s basketball schedule.

Santa Clara University, the Jesuit University of the Silicon Valley, serves as host for the Cable Car Classic Thanksgiving Weekend. Along with the host Broncos, Rider will take on Rice University and North Dakota State.

“I actually played in that tournament,” said Rider head coach Kevin Baggett, who led the Broncs to 19 wins in his initial  season as head coach last year. “It is a great tournament and has a great field this year.”

Rider defeated North Dakota State in the 2004-05 Wisconsin-Green Bay Tournament, the only meeting between the Broncs and the Bison.  Rider and Rice have never met in basketball but did meet in the 2010 NCAA Baseball Championships.

Tippecanoe County is where West Lafayette, Indiana is located, home of the BIG 10 Purdue Boilermakers, who host Rider for the first time ever November 17. “Purdue is a very good team every year,” Baggett said.  “They are always in the NCAA or NIT Tournaments. They were young last year but brought in some transfers this year. That will be a big challenge for us.”

Also in November the Broncs will visit former conference rivals Lehigh and Central Connecticut. Lehigh produced an NBA draft pick last season in C.J. McCollum.  “I congratulate their program for producing an NBA lottery pick last year,” Baggett said, “but I’m glad he’s gone.”

Rider and Lehigh have met over 50 times, with the Broncs winning 60 percent of them. Rider is 6-1 all-time with the Blue Devils of CCSU.

Rider has won over 67 percent of its home games over the last six seasons and plays the 2013-14 home opener the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, November 26, against the Great Danes of Albany.

The Broncs are 1-1 all time with Albany. “The last time we played them was the BracketBuster game at their place and we did not perform well,” Baggett remembered. “We’re looking forward to having them back on the schedule and getting them here at home.”

Rider will host Wagner on December 14 in The Broncs’ Zoo.   Alumni Gym was the scene of Rider’s 1993 conference championship victory over Wagner that sent the Broncs to the first of two back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.

Rider is 15-4 vs. Wagner all time but has not played the Seahawks since joining the MAAC. “We’re looking forward to reviving that rivalry,” Baggett said.  “They are a veteran team this year.”

Rider will travel an hour southwest to the Main Line for the pre-Holiday Philadelphia festivities, taking on Villanova at the Pavilion the last Saturday before Christmas, December 21.  “Villanova is coming off a year where they were thought to not be that good and they had a great year,” Baggett said, “and they are only going to build on that. We look forward to going out and playing tough teams, to prepare us for the tough teams in our conference.”

The Broncs will host the University of Pennsylvania Quakers on the last Sunday of 2013, December 29. “Penn has a lot of players returning so they are going to be good,” Baggett said.

The fans get a sneak-peek of the new Broncs, as well as the new LED video display board in Alumni Gymnasium when Rider hosts Division II East Stroudsburg in an exhibition game November 2.  “We’re excited to get out there and start playing,” Baggett said.

All home games, except for televised contests, will be streamed on BroncVision, the pay per view video stream of Rider Athletics which is part of the MAAC.TV network.

GameWatcher (LiveStats) will also be available for free on the website for all home games and most away contests.

Game times, televised games  and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games will be announced at a later date.
