Rider Honored with National Award for Academics
LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University volleyball team was recently honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) with a Team Academic Award for its performance in the classroom for the 2012-13 academic year.
The Broncs finished with a 3.50 team grade point average and were one of 130 programs honored out of the 328 Division I NCAA women's squads in the nation.
Head coach Christopher Feliciano is happy with the hard work and dedication of all of those who help student-athletes succeed on the court and in the classroom.
“This award not only recognizes the hard work the players have put into their studies, but demonstrates the level of dedication that Academic Coordinator Soyna Hurt, Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Kelly Bidle and the rest of the Rider Academic staff puts into our department on a daily basis,” Feliciano said. “Without their rigorous effort and support systems, this recognition would not have been achievable. While the award is designated to the volleyball program it really goes to Rider University.”
This marks the third time that the volleyball team has been honored by the AVCA for academics.
The volleyball team had a 3.30 grade point average during the 2009-10 academic year.
The team compiled a 3.62 team grade point average in the spring of 2006, the highest semester grade point average ever recorded by a varsity team at Rider, and a 3.42 grade point average for the 2005-06 academic school year.
Rider 2013 graduate Brittany Gajewski led the team with a 3.95 grade point average, earning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic honors for 2012-13 with current junior Rachel Jensen the top returnee with a 3.81 grade point average in 2012.
For the past 29 semesters, the volleyball squad has achieved a team grade point average over a 3.00 and since the Fall of 1993, the volleyball team has won the semester grade point average title four times.
Rider opens the 2013 season Friday, August 30 in the Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament against Nicholls State in New Orleans, La., with the Broncs playing Mississippi Valley State and host Tulane on August 31.
The home opener is September 11 against La Salle at 7:00pm in Alumni Gymnasium on the Lawrenceville, New Jersey campus.
