Broncs Host Bryant Friday
LAWRENCEVILLE— Home Sweet Home.
The Rider University women’s soccer team is 21-7-4 at home over the last four years, and will host Bryant University 5pm Friday on the Ben Cohen Field in the 2013 home opener.
The young Rider (0-1) squad, with 11 new faces, including five freshmen and a sophomore in the starting line-up, lost the season opener at Bucknell last Friday.
“It is going to take time to put all the pieces together,” said head coach Drayson Hounsome, who guided the 2012 Broncs to a 10-4-3 record, a program-best .676 winning percentage. “There is loads of work to be done and with all the newcomers it is like going back to the drawing board. We won’t be hitting on all cylinders in the first few games but we’ve got a good group of players. The goal is to be playing our best when it counts the most.”
Bryant (0-2) is coming off a pair of 1-0 losses, at Hartford and against Maine in the Bulldog home opener. Senior Shana Follette was the leading Bryant scorer last year with eight goals and leads the team this year with nine shots.
Rider freshmen Vanessa Perdomo (Hillsborough, NJ/South Brunswick) and Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) each played a half in goal for Rider in the opener. Perdomo made four saves in the first half after allowing a goal in the first five minutes of play. Howard made five saves in the second half, allowing two header goals.
The Broncs won 3-0 at Bryant in 2011 in the only other meeting between these two teams. “We played a good game up there a few years ago,” Hounsome said.
Rider is 2-1-3 in its last six home openers, including a 1-0 win last year over NJIT.
Weather permitting, all home soccer games are streamed on BroncVision, the pay per view video stream of Rider Athletics.
GameWatcher (LiveStats) will also be available for free on the website for all home games and most away contests.
