Rider’s O’Brien MAAC Rookie of the Week
EDISON—Freshman Kalyn O'Brien of the Rider University field hockey team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for all games played the opening week of the season it was announced Tuesday afternoon.
“Kalyn had a great weekend of play,” said head coach Lori Hussong, in her 14th season at Rider. “We are happy that her efforts did not go unnoticed and look forward to her continued success as we move forward in the season.”
A 5-2 forward from Southampton, New Jersey, O’Brien started her first two collegiate games and did not disappoint, scoring once in each as Rider, the preseason conference favorite, opened the 2013 season 2-0.
At Colgate on August 30, O’Brien took a pass from senior Alicia Govannicci (Springfield, Pa.) and scored the game-leading goal with 16 minutes remaining as Rider took a 2-1 lead in the eventual 3-2 win over the Raiders.
On the road against Georgetown on September 1, O’Brien continued her strong play, taking a pass from All-Region senior Sandra Penas (Barcelona, Spain) to give the Broncs a 4-0, opening half lead against the Hoyas.
For the week, O’Brien had four shots, three on goal and two of which hit the back of the cage.
O’Brien was a four-year letterwinner for field hockey as a midfielder at Seneca High School, earning First Team All-Conference honors as a team captain and Most Valuable Player.
While at Seneca, O’Brien was in the National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class.
Rider travels to Villanova Wednesday at 7 p.m.
