Griffin honored by the MAAC
Rider’s O’Brien MAAC Rookie of the Week
EDISON—Freshman Kaitlyn Griffin of the Rider University volleyball team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for all matches played the opening week of the season it was announced Tuesday afternoon.
“We are honored that the MAAC recognized Kaitlyn's week,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano, in his third season at Rider. “She works tremendously hard every day in practice and always wants to improve.”
A 6-1 middle hitter from Chesapeake, Virginia, Griffin had an outstanding start to her collegiate career, leading Rider to wins in two of three matches at Tulane’s Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament in New Orleans.
Starting all three matches and playing in all nine sets, Griffin earned all-tournament honors by averaging 2.67 kills per set and 1.00 blocks per set while making only four errors in 44 attack attempts the entire weekend.
“Kaitlyn is one of the reasons that we did so well in the one on one situations,” Feliciano added about the tournament hosted by Tulane. “Because of her hitting percentage, she commanded a lot of attention from the opposing defenses and our setters did a great job getting the middle established.”
Against Nicholls State in a 3-0 Bronc win, Griffin scored 10 points and had eight kills and three blocks and in a win against Mississippi Valley State, Griffin led Rider to a 3-0 sweep with 10 kills, three blocks and a .529 attack percentage, making only one error in 17 total attacks.
Griffin came to Rider from Hickory High School where she was a four-year letterwinner for volleyball, earning First Team All-Region as a senior and First Team All-Southeastern District honors as a junior and senior.
Griffin was also a two-time Southeastern Player of the Year and earned the Chesapeake Sports Club Girls Volleyball Player of the Year award.
Rider travels to Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday at 7 p.m.
