Broncs Home Tuesday vs. LIU Brooklyn
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University men’s soccer team will look to improve to 4-1 for the first time since 1996 when the Broncs host LIU Brooklyn Tuesday afternoon.
“We’re ready,” said head coach Charlie Inverso. “LIU is a good team. We’ve lost two tough 1-0 games to LIU the last two years so we need to come back and be ready to go on Tuesday for us to get out to a 4-1 start.”
Rider’s current 3-1 start is the best in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and the best for Rider since the Broncs began the 2006 season 3-1-1. Rider began the 1996 season 4-1 and finished that year in third place in its final year in the Northeast Conference.
Rider and LIU are former NEC rivals. Rider holds a 7-4 advantage in the series that began in 1933. LIU won the last three meetings, last season in Brooklyn, 2011 at Rider and in 2002 at Rider, all by the score of 1-0.
The last time Rider defeated LIU was also in 1996 in an NEC game.
LIU (1-3-1) defeated Manhattan 2-0 on Friday for its first win of the season, after tying La Salle (0-0) and losing its first three games to San Francisco (2-0) and St. Mary’s (2-0) in California and at home to George Washington (2-0).
The Broncs continue to be led by the play of freshman Christian Flath (Bargeshagen, Germany), who has three goals and two assists for eight points. His eight points is tied for second most in the MAAC, as is his three goals.
Flath ‘bent it like Beckham’ in his last game, scoring on a 25 yard direct kick that he bent around the wall and just inside the goal post to lead Rider to a 2-1 win at Bryant.
The young Broncs have scored seven goals in four games this year, and six of them have been scored by freshmen.
Weather permitting, Tuesday’s game, as well as all home soccer games, will be streamed on BroncVision, the pay per view video stream of Rider Athletics.
GameWatcher (LiveStats) will also be available for free on the website for all home games and most away contests.
