Men: Hofstra University 6, Rider University 1
Women: Hofstra University 7, Rider University 0
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.—Both the Rider University men’s and women’s tennis teams lost a non-conference match at Hofstra on Saturday afternoon.
“Hofstra was a very strong and experienced team,” said head coach Ed Torres. “The matches were played under windy conditions.”
For the Rider women, junior Alison Noll (Monmouth Junction/South Brunswick) continued her strong play, winning seven games at first singles before losing 6-2, 7-5 with junior Leonora Paul (Hackensack) winning five games at sixth singles before falling 6-1, 6-4.
“Alison is among the best players that I have coached at Rider,” Torres said. “Even though she has lost some matches, she is playing very well against some top competition. All of the points are close when she plays. And in the sixth spot with Leonora, the ball doesn’t travel very fast but she is a strong athlete and her game continues to improve from last year. She is playing steady and she is in every point.”
For the Bronc men, senior Sean Sweeney (Franklinville/Delsea Regional) won four games at fourth singles before losing 6-2, 6-2.
“Sean played well,” Torres said. “He returned serve well against an excellent server. He keeps his ground strokes in play and battles for every point.”
The Rider men were awarded the point at sixth singles with Hofstra only playing matches 1-5.
The Rider men host St. Thomas Aquinas Sunday at noon.
